Who I am:

I’m a Highly Sensitive Person. I used to hate that about myself. Ever since I was a child, it was apparent that I felt emotions differently than most others. Stronger. More intense. “Sensitive” was often used to describe me in a pejorative way. This was unequivocally a negative thing in the eyes of the adults around me who feared I would not survive in a society and world that often rewards narcissism and callousness.

Feeling shame from my sensitivity, I for a long time pretended to be someone I was not. This led me down many dark paths that ultimately resulted in chronic depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and addiction.

Through all of that darkness, I always had this yearning to better understand the mysteries of life and the Universe. I started exploring different religions at 18 and have spent a considerable amount of time in Buddhism, various Christian denominations (Lutheran, Quaker, Episcopal, Catholic, Presbyterian, United Church of Christ), Unitarian Universalism, and Paganism. I even planned to go to seminary to become a Progressive Christian minister. (I changed my mind on that one.) I no longer practice any of these religions, but I appreciate what each one taught me.

Although I don’t have a religion, I’m still a very spiritual person. That word, spiritual, gets thrown around quite a bit these days. For me, this means that I believe that there is more to reality than meets the eye. I believe in “God” in that I believe everyone and everything in the Universe is “God”. I believe science and spirituality can and should coexist peacefully. I believe that we are all one – not just in the trite “kumbaya” sense, but that we are literally all connected and the world would be a better place if we remembered that more often.

What this is:

This site is a space for other sensitive people (Highly Sensitive Person, empath, overexcitable or simple “sensitive”) who are as passionate and curious about spirituality as I am. While I now believe that being sensitive is a unique gift, I am not naive to the challenges we face. I plan to provide spiritual tools (meditations, prayers, etc.) to help you on your journey.
